Hello London and your sun, wind, and rain! When I arrived in London my friend Julian (whom I have not seen in about a year) and I were discussing my new career. He mentioned my age . . . and asked if I would be a character actor. I have heard this term a few times before and I'm not sure I like it. I immediately assumed he meant I was too old and ugly to be a leading lady - I'm sure that is not what he meant at all, but it got me thinking . . . I don't much care for labels - I find them restrictive, and I am not going to listen for those words - age and character actor any more. Nobody puts Mandy in a corner!
On the subject of age though - it is something that crosses my mind much more often now that I am acting than it did before. . . I saw a quote today while boarding the plane on one of those HSBC ads - it said: 'Two thirds of the people who have EVER lived past the age of 65 are alive today.' Wow. Just let that sit for a second - in fact, read it again . . . 'Two thirds of the people who have EVER lived past the age of 65 are alive today.' The rules have changed - no - the GAME has changed. People are still vibrant and relevant way into their 80's - even their 90's - like Betty White (90) and Warren Buffett (81). So F that. I'm gonna make up new rules baby. Just WATCH me!
It is never too late to be who you might have been. George Eliot
Don't let the age myth get in your way - that's soooo 1984.
I was feeling a bit overwhelmed when I arrived at Pearson and I remembered something I heard Barbara Deutsch say in a seminar (the same seminar where I met a woman who made her Broadway debut on her 60th birthday!!!). She said that actors should stop reading self help books and start reading fiction - the be inspired, and to love the art of story telling! I bought a book called 'The Witch's Daughter' by Paula Brackston. So far it is doing its job of relaxing my brain and bringing out the witch in me!
I just went to the drugstore to buy vitamins, herbs and enzymes to keep myself healthy. I will need all of my powers to become a channel for the Universal wisdom that is flowing through me.
I am a good witch after all :D
